Stefan Prohorov is a Bulgarian stage director and playwright, working mostly in the fields of theatre and performance art. His work focuses on an interdisciplinary approach towards socially relevant subjects, as well as cross-cultural experiments in the field of classical theatre. Currently, he’s focused on interactive and sensorial performances on social issues such as LOW COST (2017) a documentary-sensorial performance, exploring the social aspects of tourism in Bulgaria, and chamber experimental forms such as “Packages” (2017), a one-on-one site-specific physical performance.
He studied at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Art, Sofia, Bulgaria and the Escola Superior Artistica do Porto, Porto, Portugal.
Since his graduation in 2016, he has produced plays for different municipality and state theatres in Bulgaria, as well as various independent experimental performance projects.
Several of his plays have been produced in theatres in Sofia, and/or presented at different festivals, such as INTERPLAY 2012.
He has worked in many forms and genre stretching from Beijing Opera to Forum Theatre, and has also worked with different companies in Portugal, Hungary, Denmark and others.
Also relevant to his work is his experience as a trainer in different aspects of theatre practices – acting, directing, translation for the stage and as a pedagogue in the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, Sofia, Bulgaria.
Stefan Prohorov has taken part in different film and theatre festival juries (Venice Film Festival, 2014, Setkani/Encounters, Brno, 2016) and published articles on these subjects in different national and foreign media.
